Roofers: Why Your Estimates Aren’t Turning Into Jobs

You drive out, inspect the roof, take photos, and send a detailed estimate. Then you hear nothing. You call once, leave a voicemail, and move on because another inspection needs your attention. Meanwhile, the homeowner may still have questions about the scope, timing, or price. When there’s no clear next step after the estimate, a promising opportunity can sit untouched until someone else earns the job.

Start with a simple spreadsheet containing the customer’s name, estimated date, last conversation, next follow-up date, and status. Every open estimate should have an owner and a next action. Try a follow-up the next business day, another three days later, and a final check-in the following week, adjusting to the homeowner’s timeline. Save a helpful message in your phone: “Hi, Jordan—what questions came up when you reviewed the roof estimate? I’m happy to walk through the scope.” Set calendar reminders so following up doesn’t depend on remembering. Close out declined jobs and record why you lost them.
